EBG MedAustron GmbH in Wiener Neustadt operates one of the most modern centers for particle therapy and research in Europe. Cancer patients are treated with an innovative form of radiation therapy with protons and carbon ions. In addition to cancer treatment the facility is also used for translational research.

Group Lead Accelerator Concept, Design & Commissioning (f/m/x)

Full-time (40 hours weekly) / Start date: 01.01.2025

Challenges you conquer:

  • Lead the system engineering and design of the accelerator system and its components.
  • Oversee the system engineering of medical devices, ensuring integration with the overall accelerator system
  • Manage requirements engineering for both internal and external developments, including software, firmware, and hardware components (e.g., MACS, FEC, MADAM, LLRF, RFKO systems)
  • Develop accelerator requirements for the machine as a whole, as well as subcomponents needed for system realization
  • Lead the design, simulation, and validation of accelerator systems to ensure optimal performance
  • Maintain and validate operational models of the machine and accelerator, ensuring their accuracy and functionality
  • Assess the impact of changes or upgrades to accelerator components, holding veto power over any modifications that could affect subsystem and beam properties.
  • Lead the commissioning of the therapy system, from the source to the nozzle, including future in-room equipment
  • Ensure the therapy system complies with all regulatory standards.
  • Envision and guide improvements for simulation and analysis tools to drive continuous system enhancement
  • Lead the development of QA, commissioning, and simulation tooling to support system performance and reliability
  • Provide on-call support for Operations & Services (OP&S), coordinating with the Technical Performance & Reliability group
  • Document technical design and commissioning processes in line with Medical Device Regulations (MDR)

  • Proven leadership and management experience in system engineering and design, particularly in complex technical environments
  • In-depth understanding of accelerator systems and subsystems, with a focus on their interaction and impact on overall performance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey complex technical concepts
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams on high-priority tasks
  • A process-oriented approach with a focus on continuous improvement in system engineering and design
  • Excellent documentation skills, with a commitment to enhancing these skills within the company
  • Regulatory understanding, particularly in the application of norms and standards for medical devices and accelerators
  • Ability to clearly communicate and implement management vision at the group and team level, driving practical solutions
